Hey everyone, in case you missed the news, there are new online classes up and we start on Monday! Cook with my sister Joye and me LIVE online, or watch the replays and cook in your own time. 😊 A recipe eBook and video are included with each class for you to keep.

Tired of the same old salads? Try adding some juli

Tired of the same old salads? Try adding some julienned cucumber and ruby red grapefruit to your tossed salad! This was a “use what I had” salad yesterday and we loved it - mixed greens, halved cherry tomatoes, julienned cucumber, paper-thin slices of red onion, ruby red grapefruit (filleted so no bitter pith!), and just a good squeeze of grapefruit juice and a sprinkle of sea salt for the dressing. Yum!

You can find this handy “multifunctional peeler” in my shop - one end peels just about anything (and can shave thin slices off veggies or hard cheeses), the other end juliennes, grates or makes veggie noodles. 😊

PS If you’re wondering what else is on the plate, that’s the meatloaf from my Simple, Healing Food cookbook - it has a lot of carrot in it and it’s delish! 😁

As you can imagine by the title, we have a lot of fun experimenting with recipes and ingredients, often recipe developing as we go, with lots of laughs and sisterly competition 😄 and always with delicious results!! You can cook along with us as we livestream from my Quirky kitchen, or watch the replays and cook later. A recipe eBook and video replay is included with each class for you to keep. The other night I needed to use up some peaches th

The other night I needed to use up some peaches that were very ripe (and a couple of plums), so I decided to make tarte tatins to take to my daughter’s house for dinner with friends. They were a hit, and my French friend was thrilled because tarte tatin is a traditional recipe from Orleans, her home town! (I was a bit worried my “quirky” version might not cut it, but she thought it was lovely and kept some for her breakfast - phew! 😄)

This is a recipe I created for my first cookbook 10 years ago. I made a few changes to use what I had on hand, including swapping the gluten-free pastry for the grain-free pastry from Life-Changing Food (with some butter added so it’s more of a shortcut pastry), and using cardamom pods instead of star anise.

It’s actually a really simple recipe, and a lovely dessert for a dinner party, so give it a go! (Don’t forget to go for a walk while the fruit cools down. 😁🌿)

{Friday night treat!} Make a batch of my Vanilla Cupcakes with half a plum set into the top of each cupcake (or some fresh raspberries 😍), then drizzle over some chocolate ganache! SO GOOD!! 🤩🤩🤩

These gluten-free, grain-free cupcakes can be made dairy free and nut free, so keep them in mind for lunchboxes! They freeze well, or you can store them in the fridge in an airtight container for 1 week.

{Strawberry Ice Cream} 🍓 When we were kids we h

{Strawberry Ice Cream} 🍓 When we were kids we had a family tradition of making ice cream on Christmas Day, usually with fresh peaches. We had an old wooden ice cream churn, and mum filled it with ice and rock salt, then placed the metal ice cream canister filled with the mixture into the bucket of ice. Then we all took turns turning the crank to make the canister go round and round in the ice, and after a while - voila! The BEST ice cream you’ve ever tasted!! I don’t know what happened to that old ice cream churn, I wish we still had it… now we use an electric ice cream maker* which is not quite the same (nostalgia? 😅) but still yum. 😁 (You can also make it with a Thermomix or blender - see below.)

The other day I picked lots of strawberries in my garden and realised I hadn’t made any homemade ice cream yet this Christmas 😱, so decided to make a quick batch of strawberry ice cream! Here’s how:

Ingredients:
- 6 egg yolks
- 350ml pure cream (or coconut cream)
- 150ml full fat milk (or coconut milk)
- 100g honey (or to taste - I used a little more as my strawberries were a bit tart)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla powder (see my store) or 1 tsp extract
- 1 tsp gelatine powder
- 2 cups fresh strawberries (if they’re large cut into quarters)

Method:
Freeze the ice cream maker insert, if using.
Place all ingredients except strawberries into Thermomix and cook 6 mins/80C/sp4 or cook on stovetop whisking until slightly thickened. Cool mixture in a bowl in the fridge until chilled.
Pour mixture into ice cream maker insert and mix as per maker’s instructions, adding strawberries partway through.
Or if you don’t have an ice cream maker, freeze the mixture in ice cube trays then blend in a Thermomix or blender when ready to serve, folding strawberries through at the end.

*I always get asked what ice cream maker I have - it’s a Cuisineart with a compressor, but Joye has one without the compressor (cheaper) and it actually makes ice cream quicker and better than mine 😅 Anyway I’m thinking of finding a vintage wooden churn for next year, it’s more fun. 😁

It’s a new year, full of possibilities! If you feel like you didn’t get off to a good start yesterday, don’t worry - every day is a new day. Your health goals don’t have to start on the first day of the year, or week, or month. Start today! Or Friday! Sit down and make a meal plan for the next week. Clean out your fridge and see what needs to be used up. Shop for some fresh veggies and make a healthy dinner tonight. (There’s lots of easy, family-friendly ideas in my Simple, Healing Food cookbook!) You can still have leftover trifle for dessert 😉. Start easing in to healthy eating while finishing off the holiday food - that’s ok! It doesn’t have to be “all or nothing” - add in healing foods here and there to your everyday diet, like meat stock, eggs, fermented veggies, a little milk kefir, a fresh veggie juice, a slow-cooked meal that you can set and forget for the day. I’m a big believer in gradually crowding out the not-so-great food choices by gradually adding in more and more of the nutrient-dense, healing foods, and making healthier swaps as you can. That’s how our family healed, and it’s much less stress than the all or nothing approach!!

My meal plan this week* - there’s still a fair bit of holiday food happening as we have visitors and the kids coming and going, but as you can see I’m getting some healing foods in too. Not listed on the meal plan are things like milk kefir, water kefir, sauerkraut, eggs, good fats, fresh juices, and a cup of stock a day - adding them in wherever I can! *(This meal planner notepad is available in my store.)

What healing food can you add in today? It doesn’t have to be a lot, something is better than nothing! 🤗
